This introit is long and quite complex. It addresses God directly. What are these things that God has done to me? It is certainly true that I have sinned against God and not obeyed His commandments. Does God really want me to think about my sin right now, right before mass?

Let’s take God up on His word. Let’s not save God for only the really hard things. God looks to us in mercy, saves us, and holds us tenderly. Let’s not waste God’s passion for us and our holy energy trying to figure out who is the greatest.

The introit serves to ground us firmly: knowing who God is, who we are and why we gather. We will need to have this disposition if we are to be present to the serious instructions in the Scriptures we hear today.
